Wawel Royal Castle Wawel Castle was built on the shore of the Vistula in the 11th century and has since then been used as a royal residence, military base and as government offices. Now open to the public, travelers can tour grand state rooms, the Crown Treasury and Armory and the Dragon's Den - a cave on Wawel Hill that features a legend about a dragon slain by Krakus, the city's founder. Barbican-Florian Tower Krakow's Barbican fortification, located at the edge of the old town, was built in the gothic style in the 15th century and was joined to the Florian Tower's gateway to the city. Impressive even if just viewed from the outside, the interior may also be explored as part of a guided tour.
